Analysis of the Manufacturing Process and Properties of Xuan Paper
The production process of Xuan paper, one of the traditional Chinese crafts, is deeply rooted in history and culture. It mainly includes raw material selection, pulp making, paper gathering, drying, and cutting. Firstly, the main raw materials for Xuan paper are the bark of the green peony tree and sandy rice straw, which are plant fibers. These raw materials need to be grown under specific climate and soil conditions to ensure the quality of their fibers. Then they are immersed in water, boiled, dried, and washed to extract the cellulose from the raw materials by removing the pectin and proteins. This process produces a pulp that is then bleached and ground. Secondly, the pulp is evenly placed on a bamboo screen and spread uniformly through regulating the consistency of the pulp and the inclination of the screen, thereby controlling the thickness and density of the paper. This requires skilled techniques and experience. After that, the wet paper is placed in the sun to dry and solidify. This step requires good timing and climate conditions to prevent paper deformation or damage. Finally, the dried paper is cut according to the desired size to complete the final production process. Regarding its properties, Xuan paper is unique due to its manufacturing process: Firstly, Xuan paper has a fine texture due to its long fibers and strong tensile strength. The surface is smooth but not lacking in fineness. Secondly, it has excellent ink absorption, with ink spreading evenly on the paper without bleeding, making writing or painting appear clear and layered. Thirdly, Xuan paper has strong durability; its color and texture do not change significantly even after prolonged use and storage. This allows many ancient calligraphy and painting works to be preserved until now. Lastly, Xuan paper is easy to preserve due to its good resistance to insects and moisture. Overall, Xuan paper's unique manufacturing process and properties make it a highly valued traditional Chinese craft that has been passed down through generations.
